Solstices and Equinoxes Solstices & Equinoxes follows color and light changes from sunrise to sunset at the same location in Watershed 2, a tributary of Lookout Creek in the H.J. Andrews Experimental Forest, on the Solstices and Equinoxes. Beginning at sunrise, I took a photograph of the creek with my white rock in the center of the image in ten-minute intervals, ending at sunset. The white rock acts as a neutral constant to allow me to see the turbidity of the water compared to the water’s color as it was affected by the creek bed and reflections. The colors of the white rock are...

Recompose (Wall Installation) Recompose (Wall Installation) I spent one uncomfortably hot summer day wading and swimming in Lookout Creek in the HJ Andrews Experimental Forest in Oregon’s Cascade Mountains. In a logjam on the edge of the creek is a bone-white naked log with a small patch of fungus following the log’s longitudinal cracks. I almost missed it because it was so small and unassuming. When I saw it, I instantly fell in love with it. Window-like holes created by insects open into the interior of the log revealing ribbons of cubical brown rot, cellulose long gone. Fungus, like an...

Human Error The range of colors produced from translating digital chromatic data to oil paint hues 2014 – 2015 On October 11, 2014 I collected three sets of chromatic data from Watershed 1, Lookout Creek, and Watershed 3 in the HJ Andrews Experimental Forest at their respective gauging stations between 10:55 AM and 3:43 PM with a Canon 6D camera. A white rock was placed in the creek beds to provide a neutral reference point to compare the colors of the perceptual color of the water isolated from the overall perceived color of the creek as created by the creek bed and reflected...

A few points in the year hold dramatic transformation, as when blossoms suddenly cover entire trees like puffs of soft, warm snow, or wetland fields explode with the purple of camas. I desire to sit with eyes wide open to witness the exact...

During my residency at HJ Andrews Experimental Forest in 2012 I became fascinated by intricate burrows in logs and snags with the bark stripped away. Bark beetles created the burrows, as if writing poetry for us to find, in a language that we have some vague recollection of once knowing, but have now forgotten. The HJ Andrews Experimental Forest Projects 2012 - Present The HJ Andrews Experimental Forest near Blue River, Oregon, is one of 26 long-term ecological research sites throughout the world. This makes it an ideal place for creating multiple extended projects informed by ecological changes over time and observing my development of a sense of place through the creation of artwork. With this long-term approach mirroring the mission of the site, my work addresses environmental issues and ecological considerations. It recontextualizes scientific language and methods to develop a visual language...
